COUNSELLING COURSE - TRAIN TO BE A PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLOR

Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling

This course provides a professional training in counselling. It is designed to promote the development of knowledge, skills and self-awareness.

Duration and Structure

Duration - Part-time (3 years)

The foundation year carries 120 hours, and year two and three 450 hours, as required by British association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). These hours cover the lectures, seminars and clinical seminar hours only.

The course is scheduled to take place at weekends (2 Saturdays a month). Year One 12 hours per month (2 Saturdays), usually 9.30 – 4.300pm. The foundation year meets for three ten-week terms per year. The core-training year two and three – meets two Saturdays (a month - 9.30 – 6.30pm) for twelve months per year, with occasional Saturday evening seminars (3 per year). Outside of the course day are four Saturday workshops over two years, for tutorials and client work. Supervision of clinical work is in small groups and with guidance from a supervisor. The formal taught component of the clinical training is completed in two years, many students will take up to three years to complete the required number of client hours. Supervision, tutorials and personal therapy are mandatory until client hours are completed. You should also allow time each week for reading.

Foundation Year (Stage 1)

This course provides counselling skills at an informal level, to counsellor practitioner training. It focuses on the theoretical concepts and skills needed as the foundation for beginning client work experience within a counselling agency setting.

The Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling (Stages 2 & 3)

This course prepare you to work as a capable counselling practitioner.You will study a theoretical model, ethical practice, specialist issues relevant to working as a counsellor, group training supervision, counselling skills practice, and an ongoing process group. There will be workshops on cultural diversity, anxiety and depression, difference and anti-discriminatory practice.

Student must successfully completed the foundation year to be awarded a Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory, and move to the next level. During the second year, student should pass the modules offered of the second year to be awarded a Diploma in Counselling Skills, and move to the next level. During the third year, student must completed the entire course and submit the required assessments, including, practice logs, supervisor and personal therapy reports


By the end of the course of the course you will:
1. Be equipped with the clinical experience and theoretical knowledge to work both in an agencies and as an independent counsellor
2. Have developed an awareness of your own patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving and be able to reflect on the impact of this on yourself and others
3. Be rounded in the skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to work towards individual BACP accreditation as a counsellor
4. Develop an appreciation of the philosophies, theories and research concerning the various counselling approaches.
5. Provide opportunities to investigate significant counselling issues through case studies.
6. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the therapeutic process.
7. Acquire critical understanding of the place and role of counselling in society.
8. Recognize the need for personal development in relation to training as a counsellor.
9. Appraise the importance of personal experience and values and attitudes in counselling practice.
10. Explore the issues in relation to counselling in various settings
11. Explain the importance of research methodology in counselling.
12. Consider the relevance of ethical, social and cultural issues in the counselling process.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience required for Foundation year

For the Clinical Training Candidates should:
1. Have completed the Foundation Course or equivalent Certificate in Counselling/Counselling skills
2. Evidence of ability to study
3. Experience of self-exploration, and a willingness to work on personal material as a client during the course
4. Involvement in counselling in a paid or voluntary setting, which will provide a minimum of 75 hours of counselling practice in Year 1 and 150 hours in Year 2.
5. A commitment to engage in personal counselling or therapy for the period of the course.
6. A personal statement of a 500 word statement entitled 'Why I want to train as a professional counsellor', explaining why you wish to follow the course, and any supporting information about yourself.
7. Provide the names of two referees who know you well. One reference should be a tutor from your Certificate course.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be expected to attend all lectures and to participate in discussions and submit class assignments or attend class presentations. Various teaching methods: lectures, discussions, seminars, workshops, case study conferences, experiential work (where applicable), group discussions, and tutorials will be used with active participation of students and process group participation

Assessment
Assessment is continuous, including elements of self-, peer- and tutor-assessment.
